About
The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres
The Round Barn Theatre is Amish Acres’ crowning glory. The original 60-foot diameter barn measures 60-feet to the cupola’s self-supporting cedar shingle roof. The proscenium stage is housed in the original hand-hewed timer straw shed, which was added to the round barn early in its history. When Amish Acres first opened Plain and Fancy in 1986, the picturesque round barn, in which you are sitting was on a farm twelve miles away.
In 1991, the round barn was donated by B.J. and Shelley Schrome. It was dismantled by a team of Amish carpenters and transferred to Amish Acres where a state-of-the-art facility was crafted to surround the framework and structure of the 1911 barn.
In 1992, The Round Barn Theatre opened its doors to become the National Home of Plain and Fancy. Since that time, it was flowered into Indiana’s only resident repertory company providing audiences with one of America’s most endearing theatrical experiences. Few journeys covering four decades have brought so much happiness and understanding to so many people.
“The Contractor set up the jigs in the barnyard. Green timbers were cut and fitted into the jigs. When they were properly seasoned, they were put into place by the use of scaffolds, boom poles, ropes, pulleys and horses, plus hard labor put the barn together.”
